History

Over the past 30 years, the LFO has evolved in terms of its independence, focus and activism. While its revenue is determined by a potentially changeable economic climate and fluctuating interest rates, the LFO has always strived to maintain a solid financial foundation/base.

Throughout its history, the LFO has been able to sustain a minimum level of funding for its grantees even during times of extreme economic hardship. As the organization evolved, the LFO began to establish itself more firmly as an independent and important grant-making body whose impact in both the legal community and community at large would be made more widely known.

From its inception in 1974 to present day, the LFO has given out over $160 million in grants and over $500 million to Legal Aid Ontario. The LFO’s 33–year history demonstrates a strong commitment to supporting the community and to promoting excellence within the profession.

In the coming years, the LFO will work to maintain and support more initiatives and enable the work it has seeded to continue having long–lasting and wide–ranging impact.
